Dec 10 2006: West District Cross Country Championships, East Kilbride

Ayr Seaforth had a reasonably strong squad for the West District Cross Country Championships at East Kilbride on Saturday, although a few strong athletes were missing through either injury or illness. The recent inclement weather provided a difficult course, which was probably one of the muddiest and most testing in recent memory. However, the younger athletes rose to the challenge and produced some fine performances. The Under 13 Boys were undoubtedly the highlight of the day. Finlay Rae produced an excellent run to finish as Seaforth’s highest place athlete of the day in 7th position in a time of 12:32. Twin brothers Ben and Angus Johnston relished the muddy conditions and great inter-sibling rivalry to finish in an excellent 20th and 21st place in 13:39 and 13:42 respectively. Kelvin Walker took 49th place in 16:40 and the team finished in 4th position. In the Under 15 Boys race, Mark Ferguson finished 11th (17:05), Andrew Rae finished 18th (17:42) and Tom Andrews was placed 30th (18:44) from a field of 55 athletes. The gutsy performances of all three athletes resulted in a team position of 6th in a race packed with top quality young athletes. Greg Templeton was the sole representative in the Under 17 Men’s race and continues to make steady progress in finishing 31st in a time of 27:06 for the 6.4 kilometre course.

Only five girls made it to East Kilbride. The Under 13 Girls were represented by Marie Hill (38th;15:39), Katie Sprang (39th;15:46), Lauren Goldie (44th;16:07) and Rosalind McDonald (49th;16:31). The team finished in 9th position. Stephanie Dougan ran the Under 15 race despite being under the weather with a viral infection and did well to complete the 4.4 kilometre course in 31st position (22:31). Three Senior Men made the trip and braved 9.6 kilometres in the mud with Laurence Baker in 66th (41:56), Kevan Fulton in 89th (43:57) and Connell Drummond in 91st (44:15).

Saturday 16th December sees Seaforth athletes being joined by fellow Ayrodynamic athletes for the annual festive Christmas Handicap races at Dam Park. The Junior race kicks off at 1pm. All club athletes (especially sprinters!) are welcome.

Nov 29 2006: Seaforth juniors go five alive at Ayrshire championships

AYR Seaforth had junior athletes only competing at the Ayrshire cross-country championships last Saturday over a new course at Broomfield Playingfields in Cumnock.

However, the 12 members did well and managed an impressive haul of five medals.

Under 11 boy Rory Webster got the squad off to a good start, taking a bronze medal in 5 mins 02 secs for 1200m. In the same race, novice Josh Andrews finished ninth in his first ever cross-country race.

Finlay Rae took the gold comfortably in the under 13 boys race in 13.12 over a muddy 3000m course, with Kelvin Walker finishing ninth in 16.16.

The race of the day was the under 15 boys, when Seaforth training partners Mark Ferguson and Andrew Rae battled it out over 4200m.

Mark eased out Andrew over the last 200m in a tight race to win in 17.30, with Andrew just behind in 17.37.

Tom Andrews put in another gutsy performance to finish fifth in 18.23 to help Seaforth scoop gold in the team competition.

AYR Seaforth athletes starred in the mud at the Kilmarnock Harriers cross country meeting at Dean Park on Sunday.

At under 11, Rory Webster and Verity McDonald completed the 1670m course in 6.07 minutes and 6.48 minutes respectively, finishing seventh and fourth in their races.

Nov 8 2006, Seaforth rise to challenge

AYR Seaforth young athletes were in good form on Sunday at the annual Girvan Cross Country meeting, possibly one of the toughest courses in the winter calendar.

Under 11 girl Verity McDonald got the squad off to a strong start with second place over a 1000m course.

This was followed by under 11 boy, Rory Webster who also finished second.

The under 13 athletes raced over a 3000m course with Katie Sprang finishing fifth in the girls’ race and Kelvin Walker also fifth on his debut at cross-country.

The under 15 athletes had a tough 4000m course to contend with but Stephanie Dougan showed continued improvement to take a fine second place.

However, it was the under 15 boys who once again dominated, taking the the first three places in their race.

Mark Ferguson again showed his quality in comfortably winning the race but strong runs from Tom Andrews and Callum Aitkenhead gave them second and third places respectively.

There were two under 17 athletes from Seaforth. Melissa Hewitson returned from injury to take silver in the girls’ 6000m race while Greg Templeton finished eight in the boys’ race.

Two senior athletes made the trip with Connell Drummond and Kevan Fulton both running strongly to finish in the top half of the field.
