National Age Group Champs 2024

We had 12 athletes competing at the National Age Group Championships in Grangemouth this past weekend. For many this was the “big one” that they have been working towards all year. Nationals signal the end to the busy outdoor competition season. it was great to see so many athletes participating and giving great performances.

Podium Places

Isla Milligan (U13G) was the big winner of the day earning Gold in the 70m Hurdles with a huge new PB of 11.92s. Isla’s previous best going into the competition was a wind assisted 12.40s. Her best at the beginning of the outdoor season in April was 13.57s! This came at the end of a busy day where Isla raced 2 heats and the final of the 100m, finishing in 4th place with another PB of 14.07s. This is a great example of what can be achieved after consistent hard work at training. Congratulations Isla!

Speaking of hard work, there are not many who put in as much training as U13 athlete Piper Jackson who was competing in 3 throwing events on Sunday. Piper found herself on the podium of the Shot Put winning the Bronze with a throw of 7.46m which was a new PB. Piper also set a big PB in the Discus improving from 15.89m to 18.77m which was enough to finish in 4th place. A tougher day in the Javelin as Piper’s best of 20.73m left her in 6th place overall. Piper has trained incredibly hard putting in the extra sessions every week to get her up to this standard. Well done to Piper and the Throws Squad.

On the second weekend of action for U17s and Seniors, Anthony Tanagho placed 2nd in the Mixed 100m for Frame Runners and Wheelchair and was 2nd in his category (T72) in a time of 20.09s.

Performances

There were many new personal bests set over the weekend. Scottish Athletics had media coverage of the event so many of us were watching the livestream online. A special mention must go to Abigail Good who won her heat of the 800m after storming out in the lead from beginning to end shaving a massive 10 seconds off her previous best time! The U13G 800m was run as timed finals, meaning that medals were awarded to the 3 fastest times across 4 different heats. Unfortunately, the last heat ran slightly faster and Abigail’s time was only good enough for 6th place overall.
